10 Tips to Eliminate Bubbles from Epoxy Resin Projects

10 Tips to Eliminate Bubbles from Epoxy Resin Projects

Introduction

At Magic Resin Canada, we know how frustrating it can be to find bubbles in your finished epoxy resin project. That's why we've put together this guide to help you eliminate epoxy resin bubbles and achieve a flawless, smooth result every time. In this blog post, we'll explore various methods and recommendations for getting rid of those annoying bubbles.

  1. Choose the Appropriate Epoxy Resin for Your Project

The initial step to avoid bubbles is selecting the proper epoxy resin for your project. Magic Resin provides a variety of products designed for different applications and pour depths. Picking the right product ensures optimal curing and reduces the likelihood of bubble formation.

Consult our blog post "Choosing the Ideal Product and Managing Room Temperature" for advice on determining the best epoxy resin for your project.

  1. Keep a Consistent Room Temperature

Room temperature is crucial for preventing overheating and allowing bubbles to escape. Aim to maintain a temperature of approximately 24°C throughout the entire process, as this enables bubbles to be released more efficiently.

If your pour necessitates a lower room temperature to avoid overheating, note that bubble release might be less effective. In such instances, you may want to consider using a product with a higher recommended maximum pour depth to maintain the ideal 24°C temperature during curing, if optimal bubble-release is desired. The layering technique can also be employed if needed.

  1. Warm the Epoxy Resin Before Mixing

Pre-warming your epoxy resin before mixing can help minimize bubbles. To do this, place the resin and hardener bottles in a plastic bag and submerge them in a warm water bath for 5-10 minutes. Ensure the water is hot but not boiling. The plastic bag protects the labels and prevents water from getting inside the bottles. Be cautious not to overheat the resin, as it can reduce its pot time.

  1. Gently and Thoroughly Mix Your Epoxy Resin

It's vital to mix epoxy resin gently and thoroughly to prevent introducing too much air. Scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing container to incorporate all elements, but refrain from vigorous stirring that could produce additional bubbles.

  1. Apply a Thin Layer of Resin Before Pouring

Apply a thin layer of resin before pouring your epoxy resin into a mold or onto a surface to break the surface tension. This method lowers the chances of bubbles becoming trapped during the pour. You can pour shortly after this thin application.

Furthermore, a proper seal coat is particularly important when pouring onto porous materials like wood, as it prevents the wood from releasing air through the epoxy during curing. Brush on a coat using a product like our Table Top & Art Resin, wait about 4-6 hours until it hardens but remains in a tacky stage (e.g., slightly dent-able with fingernails), then proceed with the main pour. If the seal coat fully cures, lightly sand it with ~180-220 grit, remove the dust, and then pour on top of it.

  1. Utilize a Heat Source to Eliminate Bubbles

After pouring your epoxy resin, use a heat source like a heat gun, torch, or hairdryer to remove bubbles. The heat causes bubbles to rise to the surface and burst. Be careful not to overheat the resin or mold, as excessive heat can cause damage.

  1. Prevent Bubbles from Becoming Trapped in Molds

For complex molds, try "demoulding" the resin multiple times while pouring. This technique allows trapped bubbles in grooves and tight spaces to escape.

  1. Coat Inclusions/Embeddings with Resin

Before adding inclusions such as stones or wood pieces to your epoxy resin project, we recommend sealing them with a thin layer of resin. This breaks the surface tension and prevents them from releasing air during the main pours, minimizing bubble formation.

  1. Work with Thinner Layers

For more extensive projects, pouring thinner layers reduces the chances of bubbles. This approach enables more effective bubble release, and any remaining bubbles will be less noticeable in thin layers. It also allows you to work on larger projects using a product designed for thinner pours. For instance, you could use our Table Top & Art Resin to pour layers up to 1/4" at a time. However, if your project requires a thick pour, consider using one of our Deep Pour Epoxy Resin products, or the Art & Craft Resin.

  1. Exercise Patience and Practice

Lastly, keep in mind that mastering epoxy resin work takes time and practice. While selecting the most suitable product will undoubtedly simplify your process, these tips will be beneficial regardless. As you gain experience, you'll develop a better understanding of how to manage temperatures, mixing techniques, and other factors contributing to bubble formation. Be patient, practice, and don't be afraid to learn from your mistakes!

Conclusion

Attaining a perfect, bubble-free outcome with epoxy resin may seem daunting, but with the right methods and patience, it's absolutely achievable. By choosing the appropriate epoxy resin product, maintaining the ideal room temperature, carefully warming and mixing the resin, and following the tips discussed above, you can greatly reduce the chances of bubbles in your projects.
